Gymnema has been used in Ayurvedic medicine for over 2000 years to help maintain normal, healthy blood sugar metabolism. Gymnema is traditionally known in India as 'Gurmar' meaning 'sugar destroying'. This may be because chewing Gymnema leaf inhibits the ability to taste sweetness, an effect that may be due to its ability to bind to the sweet taste receptor proteins found on the tongue.
